As we're following the colours of the rainbow for this series of Folksy Fridays, you'll all know that the theme this week is blue.

It's a bigger than usual selection for this week, with a theme of green. I asked on the Folksy Forums for people to submit their green items for this week, and was overwhelemed by the lovely designs that people posted. I'm afraid I really couldn't include all of them (otherwise I'd still be writing this next week!) but I've chosen 14 items this week instead of the usual 7.

Today's interview is with Katherine from Flutterbies - let's see what she has to say...

1. Tell me a little bit about your craft(s)

I work with beads, making jewellery, tiaras and other accessories. I love working with beads and wire, they have so many possibilities!

2. What inspired you to get started with this?

I've always loved craft - I love creating something that didn't exist before, and over the years have tried everything from silk painting to pyrography, but there's just something about the beauty of beads that made me keep coming back to them time after time.

3. What do you think about the level of British craft & design talent around at the moment?

I think it's just amazing! Every time I go to a craft fair or browse on the many internet sites promoting it I'm just wowed by the standard of work out there.

4. What are your hopes for 2010? Is there a specific goal you want to reach?

I'm doing a lot this year - I'm getting married (congratulations!!!), moving house and job, so as far as my craft goes I'm just trying to keep it going. My main aim is to get to a couple of craft fairs throughout the year and try and promote my jewellery that way.

5. Do you get out and about to craft fairs? What do you think to the general standard of fairs at the moment?

I do try to, they're a great way to meet other crafters and to talk to your customers face to face. The standard is amazing, as is the range of products you can buy!

6. What do you think is the best / worst / most unusual thing you have ever made?

I went through a phase where I made lots and lots of miniature purses. They're really really cute as ornamental items, but there's not a lot else to do with them... I still have a bag full at home as they don't sell that well, but I don't mind because they're just so pretty!

7. Which other designer makers work do you admire?

There are a number of shops on folksy that I just keep going back to because their work is so gorgeous. My favourites at the moment are Fleur des Perles and Driftwood Boat Builders, they're both really unusual shops selling things you don't see everyday.

8. Do you have any pets? If so what are they, and what are they called?

I have an adorable dog called Genie, and a ginger cat called Pippin, they mostly get on!

9. Do you listen to music when you're working, and if so, what kind of music do you like?

I love listening to music, mostly indie and soft rock, but when I'm crafting more often than not I listen to the talkie shows on the radio!

Today's blog interview is with Zoe from Jewelbox

Tell me a little bit about your craft(s)

I make jewellery! Primarily necklaces, but I am just starting to try different designs in earrings and bracelets, and have made a few spectacle holders for some of my mums friends which were fun.

What inspired you to get started with this?

I absolutely love jewellery and like to have a lot of choice in what I wear. I got really fed up of seeing basically the same designs in every shop I went in, except for the shops that sold handmade items! A light bulb went off above my head, and I decided to give it a try myself.

What do you think about the level of British craft & design talent around at the moment?

I think we have got a huge amount of talent in Britain, but I don't think we make the best of it. Call it the British reserve, but I think we should be proud of our accomplishments and should shout it out in the streets. (I agree!!)

What are your hopes for 2010? Is there a specific goal you want to reach?

My hopes are to continue with my jewellery making, and possibly to branch out into other crafts. My goal would be to be able to give up my day job, and craft full time, but I think that may be a little while yet!

Do you get out and about to craft fairs? What do you think to the general standard of fairs at the moment?

I only attend craft fairs as a customer, not a seller. I think craft fairs are great, but again, not advertised well enough. I believe craft fairs/websites etc. could all do with a Nationwide campaign to bring them to peoples attention.

What do you think is the best / worst / most unusual thing you have ever made? (plus photos if possible!) The best thing I have made recently is my Chrysocolla necklace (see it on the Jewelbox blog ) The worst things I have made were when I first started making necklaces, and wasn't very good at crimping, so as soon as I put a necklace on, it fell apart! I learnt very quickly from that one!!!

Which other designer makers work do you admire?

I love your designs! (Awww thank you!) and on Folksy I think Cinnamon Jewellery has some really great items.

Do you have any pets? If so what are they, and what are they called?

I have a miniature daschund called Rose. She is 15 now, bless her. There is a photo of her on my blog!

Do you listen to music when you're working, and if so, what kind of music do you like?

I don't really listen to music, but my favourite way to make jewellery is to have a tray on my lap whislt watching telly.

Blog Interview - Toggle

This week's blog interview is with another person called Gemma, this time from Toggle. Toggle make some great fabric goodies, as well as providing a design serivce too.

Here's what Gemma had to say...

Tell me a little bit about your craft(s)

We make knitted and sewn cases for gadgets like phones and laptops. Many of our creations are made from upcycled or recycled fabrics. I love looking for fabric in vintage shops and charity shops because you never know what you'll find. So far my favourite purchases have been deck chair fabric from a sewing shop in Eastbourne and vintage scarves from a clothes shop in Falmouth. I really enjoying mixing retro looking fabrics with modern gadgets.

What inspired you to get started with this?

I've always enjoyed making things, but the idea for the toggle shop took off about a year ago. I needed a case for my mobile phone and I hadn't seen any in the shops that I liked. They were either too expensive, a bit boring...or worse, both! So I decided to make my own. It came out well and received lots of compliments. So we made some for the toggle shop. I got a new laptop a few months ago and started creating laptop cases for the same reason! And it's gone from there...

What do you think about the level of British craft & design talent around at the moment?

There's been a huge focus to 'get back to the land' in the last few months . I think part of this is due to the recession, but it's also to do with people feeling like they want to have more control over their lives. And the great thing about this is that it's encouraged people to make more themselves, whether it be cushion covers for the house, scarves or cakes and chutneys. And this seems to be helping some really talented crafters to come out of the woodwork, that may not have done so otherwise. Spend even a short amount of time looking about handmade communities like Folksy and you can see there's an enormous amount of talented British designers and makers.

What are your hopes for 2010? Is there a specific goal you want to reach?

For 2010, we are going to try and:

Use more upcycled/recycled materials. It saves resources and it's also great fun to go and have root through vintage clothing!

Expand our product ranges - more laptop case sizes, cases for more phone models and we want to start creating products for other gadgets too

Meet more crafty people

It would be lovely to get our cases into some small shops

Promote our shop!

Do you get out and about to craft fairs? What do you think to the general standard of fairs at the moment?

I have to confess I've only been to one so far but have another booked in for June which I'm really excited about. So I can't really comment on the general standard of fairs, but the one I went to was fantastic. There were a real variety of makers - pottery, glass, cards, jewellery, paintings.

As this blog interview opportunity came from Folksy I've picked some Folksy sellers' work that makes my pockets quiver!

Do you have any pets? If so what are they, and what are they called?

I have a cat called Mischief (I've noticed lots of crafters have cats). He's an 11 year old black and white moggie who loves attention and food in equal measures. Although his full name is Mischief, we've shortened to Chief now because he now rules the household. He enjoys coming to see what I'm doing when I've dropped lots of pins on the floor, my knittings tangled up or I'm hand stitching something.

Do you listen to music when you're working, and if so, what kind of music do you like?

I do unless I'm having to really really concentrate. I really like Mumford & Sons at the moment, they make some lovely music.

Tell me anything else about yourself / your work that you think might be of interest.

Toggle is a design studio as well as a craft shop

When I was little, I liked drawing and colouring in plates of baked beans for fun!

I want to learn to make felt this year

At the moment I'm working on a big crochet hexagon quilt in my spare time. I've started it now because I think it'll take me until next Christmas to finish completely :)

Well, I said I'd do some blog interviews with other designer-makers, so here's my first one, with the lovely Gemma from Sugar & Rhubarb.

I asked Gemma a few questions, and here's what she had to say....

What inspired you to get started with this?

I always wanted to learn how to sew, there’d be those moments in shops when I’d look at something and think ‘oh why didn’t they do it like this.’ So I just bit the bullet so to speak and started making my own things rather than buying something that I wasn’t 100% happy with from the High Street. When I first started sewing I used to give the end products to my friends and family. It was with their coaxing that I began selling a few items. I am totally addicted to buying homeware, my mum’s downfall is lipsticks and mine is cosies, so I thought there must be others out there like me – looking for something cute but not wanting the same design that hundreds of other houses are filled with.

What do you think about the level of British craft & design talent around at the moment?
I love everything British and handmade. To me it feels extra special to buy something that’s not only been crafted in this country but that one or only a handful of people have been involved in making. People like Poppy Treffry are major inspirations that your ideas and designs can actually become a marketable product.

What are your hopes for 2010? Is there a specific goal you want to reach?
I’d love for Sugar&Rhubarb to keep on growing and ideally start being stocked in local craft/gift shops. I know it’s going to be hard to stand out from the crowd but there’s nothing like a giant cup of coffee and sheer determination to keep you motivated!

Do you get out and about to craft fairs? What do you think to the general standard of fairs at the moment?
I love going to a craft fair, it’s a proper day out in my books, and I’d recommend it to anyone. There’s so many great designers out there and there are more and more showing that it’s fab to see what others are making and share a few of your own stories.

What do you think is the best / worst / most unusual thing you have ever made?
I am most proud of my appliqué cosies and, of course, Ninja Kitty. The cosies take a lot of time and patience to create but I’m cuffed with each and every one of them. And Ninja Kitty…. Well he’s a once figment of my humoured imagination that’s become a world dominating reality. There have been many an odd looking kitty coming out of my sewing machine, but I tend not to photograph them – instead they get chucked across the room in an artistic rage!

Which other designer-makers work do you admire?
I adore The Warren for her gorgeous sock bunnies, Bold & Noble for their screenprints, MollyMoo Designs for her cards, Alex Monroe for his jewellery and Poppy Treffry for her cosies.

Do you have any pets? If so what are they, and what are they called?
I have two cats, both of which are banned from the sewing room (aka S&R HQ) I know what they’re like and if they even get a sniff of wadding they’d be on it in a flash. One is called Tiggy and he’s refined and beautiful and the other is called MiuMiu – he came to me as a little girl kitten called Milly and then we soon realized he was a boy so I called him by the mini Prada brand name, which is ironic because he’s bug-eyed, crazy and the least refined thing I have ever seen.

Do you listen to music when you're working, and if so, what kind of music do you like?
It’s funny but I have different types of music for different products. When I’m starting a new design I’m usually listening to Florence & the machine, Yeasayer, Mumford and sons etc But when I’m struggling to keep going on a repetitive design it’s Britney all the way.

Well, there's not a lot of news from me today, I'm still busy making stock for a big craft fair in Northampton at the end of January, and for my exhibition in February (more about that to come soon...)

I included in my New Years resolution a promise to feature short interviews with other designer makers, so this post is really a quick request - if you would like to be interviewed/featured on this blog or know someone who would, please leave a comment.

Happy New Year! It seem's like Christmas was ages ago - I've been back at work for nearly a whole week now!

I'm determined to stick to my New Years resolution of keeping his blog reasonably up to date, so I thought I'd better make a start.

My lovely wonderful hubby gave me some great new polymer clay tools & goodies for xmas, so I've been busy using my shiny new pasta machine and tools to make some new creations. As I love heart shapes, I've decided to make a collection of hearts for 2010. These are some of the first for this year.

White clay heart with pink & black swirls

I'm really proud of this heart - I spent quite a while sanding it smooth so it didn't need varnish, as I wanted to give it a matt finish. The small swirly dots are raised to give the heart a really unusual bumpy appearance. It's currently for sale in my Folksy shop

This heart is a slightly more elongated shape

I love the combination of hot pink & black, so I was really tempted to keep this for myself, but I have so many pieces I can't bear to part with I don't have room for them all, so this one is also for sale on Folksy

This heart has also been sanded to a smooth finish, and polished to a soft satin shine. Polymer clay is a very tactile material, and I sometimes feel that this quality is lost a bit when varnish is used.

I have embedded the black & white swirls into this pendant, so it has a smooth appearance.

Stripey orange heart

This heart I have made using an dark yellow and dark pink Skinner blend with only a slight colour graduation. The stripey 'zipper' canes over the heart have been embedded for a smooth finish, although they do look to be raised in the photo - an optical illusion!!

I'm going to put this pendant onto a snake chain rather than a ribbon I think. It's not up for sale yet, but will be soon!

An early New Years Resolution!

Well, after endless weeks of getting orders made & sent out, updating my website, being out & about at various craft fairs and shows and then coming down with a stinking cold, my poor old blog has been rather neglected!

My early New Year Resolution for 2010 is to try and blog regularly, once a week if I can, but at least once a fortnight.

I'm going to try and do a regular feature on other designer makers every so often, with a short interview about their work and what inspires them. If you know of anyone (including yourself!) who would like me to interview them, please let me know!

I'll also be doing a blog giveaway in the New Year, as I'm working on a great new range of polymer clay designs which I'm really excited about, so will be giving one of the first of these away!! More details to come soon...

Just a quick update for today.

I spent Saturday at a local craft fair in Towcester and met loads of other lovely crafters. The fair is for genuine handmade goods only & their next fair is on Saturday 7th November at the Towcester Town Hall. On Sunday I went to the Artisan Bead & Stamp show at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre and stocked up on loads of new beads, so I'll have some fab new designs to show you soon!

I also found out last week that I've been accepted for a space at a craft fair being held on 24th & 25th October to run alongside the Oxjam Leicester fundraising festival. I'm really excited about this as it's in Leicester City Centre so hopefully should be quite busy - I'll post some more details as soon as I can!

Well, it's not long to go now until the Contemporary Craft Shopping Experience on Sunday 22nd November. OK, so it is actually quite a while away, but as I've been involved in organising this and we started planning at the very beginning of the year, it seems like it's not too long to go now.

We have some great exhibitors confirmed from all over the Midlands and beyond, and have been busily getting press releases sent out in the last few weeks. The leaflet design is now finalised and 20,000 have been printed!

Exhibitor details are continuously being uploaded to the event website here, where you can also buy advance tickets for the show and be entered into a draw to win £50 to spend on goodies on the day!!!

I'll try to post a few more in depth details about some of the exhibitors soon...

Well, I didn't think I'd find the time to blog regularly, and I was right!!

I've just returned from a lovely week in Meganisi (a small island off the west coast of Greece) which has given me some inspiration to make some really bright coloured jewellery for Autumn - perhaps a little bit against the usual autumn trends of browns and rustic colours, but then I'm not known for following trends :-)

Well, only a few hours have passed and already I've managed to put a second post up here! If only to point out that I've come to rely soooo much on spellchecker that my spelling has become really sloppy, so you'll have to excuse the huge number of typo's I'm bound to make.
